Giornalista e storico inglese (Wigton, Cumberland, 1864 - Durban, Sudafrica, 1945). Corrispondente da Roma del Morning Post (1903-23), poi da Atene fino al 1937. Studioso del bizantinismo della Grecia franca e veneziana (The Latins in the Levant, 1908; Essays in the Latin Orient, 1921), della storia turca e balcanica (The Ottoman Empire, 1801-1913, 1913), collaborò alla Cambridge Medieval History e alla Cambridge Modern History.
