Filosofo scozzese (Kirkmabreck 1778 - Londra 1820), scolaro, poi successore (1810) di Dugald Stewart all'univ. di Edimburgo, si venne progressivamente allontanando dalle posizioni del suo maestro per accostarsi a quelle di D. Hume, che difese nelle Observations on the nature and tendency of the doctrine of Mr. Hume concerning the relation of cause and effect (1804); riveduta e ristampata nel 1818 col titolo An inquiry into the relation of cause and effect. Espose la sua dottrina nelle Lectures on the philosophy of the human mind (post., 1820).
