Linguista (Budapest 1914 - Oxford 1976); laureato a Budapest, si trasferì in Inghilterra e insegnò poi in varie università britanniche, statunitensi e canadesi, e da ultimo a Oxford. Le sue opere principali sono caratterizzate dall'applicazione del metodo strutturale all'indagine semantica: The principles of semantics (1951; trad. it. 1977); Précis de sémantique française (1952); Style in the French novel (1957); Semantics: an introduction to the science of meaning (1962; trad. it. 1967). Varî saggi sono raccolti in Language and style (1964; trad. it. 1968).
