Poeta statunitense (Oakland 1919 - San Francisco 1988). Esponente di gruppi d'avanguardia, ha professato uno strenuo sperimentalismo, esprimendo in una forma poetica aperta, doviziosa e irta di richiami eruditi, una tematica erotico-mistica. Poeta difficile, D. si muove nel solco d'una tradizione che da Dante attraverso Blake giunge a Pound, a Williams. Fra le sue opere: The opening of the field (1960), Roots and branches (1964), Bending the bow (1968), Selected poems 1920-50 (1968), Poetic disturbances (1970), Poems from the margins of Thom Gunn's moly (1972). Al teatro ha dato Faust foutu (1960) e Medea at Kolchis (1965).
