Economista statunitense (Ripley, New York, 1854 - Old Lyme, Connecticut, 1943); professore nelle università J. Hopkins (1881), del Wisconsin (1892), Northwestern (1925) e Columbia (1933), fondatore dell'Institute for economic research e, con altri, dell'American economic association (1885). Seguace della scuola storica tedesca, vicino agli istituzionalisti, fu uno dei primi a controbattere le critiche mosse all'intervento statale; tra le sue opere, Outlines of economics (1894) e Property and contracts (1914) ebbero grande influenza sul pensiero economico americano. Importanti sono anche Monopolies and trusts (1900); Studies on the evolution of industrial society (1903); Foundations of national prosperity (1917).
