Scrittore statunitense (Waukegan, Illinois, 1920 - Los Angeles 2012). Di grande fecondità e versatilità, deve la sua fama al genere fantascientifico (celebre The martian chronicles, 1950; trad. it. 1968), che impiegò a significare inquietudini e "profezie" (come in Fahrenheit 451, 1953; trad. it. 1972) e messaggi (per es. in S is for space, 1966). È stato autore anche di drammi (The wonderful ice-cream suit, 1965), radiodrammi (Leviathan '99, 1966) e poesie (When elephants last in the dooryard bloomed, 1969). Fra le sue opere: The Halloween tree (1973), Death is a lonely business (1985; trad. it. Morte a Venice, 1987). Ha scritto anche: A Graveyard for lunatics. Another tale of two cities (1990), Green shadows, white whale (1992), Ahmed and the oblivion machines: a fable (1998; trad. it. 2001), One more for the road: a new story collection (2002; trad. it.
