Drammaturgo e poeta statunitense (New York 1875 - Cornish, New Hampshire, 1956). Educato a Harvard, esordì nella drammaturgia con The Canterbury pilgrims (1903), cui fecero seguito Jeanne d'Arc (1906), Sappho and Phaon (1907) e il suo dramma più famoso, The Scarecrow (1908), basato sul racconto di N. Hawthorne Feathertop. Oltre a opere sul teatro (The playhouse and the play, 1909; Community drama, 1917), si ricordano i suoi masques St. Louis (1914) e Caliban, by the Yellow Sands (1916). Studioso di folclore, dal 1930 direttore del periodico Folk-Say, utilizzò la cultura popolare come materiale teatrale, dando grande impulso al folk-drama. Tra le sue opere più ambiziose, la tetralogia The mistery of Hamlet, king of Denmark; or what we will (1949), in cui è tracciata la storia dei principali personaggi della tragedia di Shakespeare prima che questa abbia inizio.
