Attrice cinematografica (New York 1920 - Houston 1991); dopo aver recitato a Broadway, esordì nel cinema con The return of Frank James (1940), acquistando larga popolarità con la successiva interpretazione del 1941, Tobacco road. Bellezza vagamente esotica e misteriosa, insieme malinconica e glaciale, attrice dalla sensibilità non comune, valorizzata da autori come E. Lubitsch e O. Preminger, ha interpretato fra l'altro: Rings on her finger (Ragazze che sognano, 1942); Heaven can wait (1943); Laura (Vertigine, 1944); Leave her to heaven (Femmina folle, 1945); The razor's edge (1946); The ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947); The left hand of God (1955); Advise and consent (Tempesta su Washington, 1962).
