Storico ceco (Chomyž, Holešov, 1893 - Washington 1975); fu titolare fino al 1939 di storia della Chiesa presso l'univ. Carlo di Praga; poi si trasferì a Parigi, in Inghilterra, negli Stati Uniti. Di lui si ricordano: Les Slaves, Byzance et Rome au IXème siècle (1926); Les légendes de Constantin et de Méthode vues de Byzance (1933); l'importante The Photian schism. History and legend (1948), che rivaluta la figura del patriarca Fozio; The making of Central and Eastern Europe (1949); The idea of apostolicity in Byzantium (1958); Byzance et la primauté Romaine (1964); Early Christian and Byzantine political philosophy (1966); Byzantine missions among the Slavs: SS. Constantine-Cyril and Methodius (1970).
