Fuller, Thomas

Enciclopedia on line

Storico, erudito e teologo (Aldwinckle, Northampton, 1608 - Londra 1661). Predicatore assai noto, fu avversato da puritani e cattolicizzanti per la sua posizione moderata; scrittore fecondo e vivace, deve la sua fama, forse più che alle impegnative Church history of Britain (1655) e History of the university of Cambridge (1655), alle raccolte di brevi e tersi saggi, spesso seguiti da biografie esemplificative (The holy state and the profane state, 1642; Good thoughts in bad times, 1645; Good thoughts in worse times, 1647; Mixt contemplations in better times, 1660) che ne fanno un precursore dei saggisti del sec. 18º e di Ch. Lamb. Scrisse inoltre una storia delle crociate (The holy war, 1639) e una descrizione della Terrasanta (A Pisgahsight of Palestine, 1650) e The history of the worthies of England (post., 1662).
