Matematico (Oslo 1899 - ivi 1968). Dopo aver studiato a Oslo, Gottinga e Parigi, divenne (1927) prof. nella Yale University di New Haven, nel Connecticut; è stato uno dei più insigni algebristi contemporanei: a lui si debbono importanti risultati soprattutto per quel che concerne le algebre associative, la teoria degli ideali, le teorie dei reticoli e dei grafi. Ha curato la pubblicazione delle opere complete di R. Dedekind (3 voll., 1930). Tra le opere: Les corps algébriques et la théorie des idéaux (1934), Number theory and its history (1948), Theory of graphs (1962), Graphes and their uses (1963), The four-color problem (1967), Invitation to number theory (1968).
