Scrittrice anglo-irlandese (Dublino 1899 - Londra 1973). Ha occupato un posto importante nella narrativa anglosassone, distinguendosi soprattutto nella sottile indagine dei rapporti umani. Tra i romanzi più noti citiamo: The hotel (1927), Friends and relations (1931), To the north (1932), The house in Paris (1935), The death of the heart (1938, tra i migliori), The heat of the day (1949), A world of love (1955), A time in Rome (1960), The little girls (1964), Eva Trout; or changing scenes (1968). Ha scritto anche novelle: Encounters (1923), Ann Lee's (1926), Joining Charles (1929), The cat jumps (1934), Look at all those roses (1941), Early stories (1950), e saggi: Collected impressions (1950), Afterthought (1962). Postume le sue Pictures and conversations (1975).
