Scrittrice inglese (Kīrmānshāh, Persia, od. Iran, 1919 - Londra 2013). Dal 1924 al 1949 visse nella Rhodesia meridionale; nel 1949 si trasferì in Inghilterra. Nel primo romanzo The grass is singing (1950) affronta il tema che, accanto a quello della posizione della donna nella società, diverrà dominante nella sua opera: i rapporti tra bianchi e neri in Africa. Nota soprattutto per il ciclo dei cinque romanzi Martha Quest (1952), A proper marriage (1954), A ripple from the storm (1958), Landlocked (1965) e The four-gated city (1969), ha scritto anche racconti (A man and two women, 1963; African stories, 1964; The grandmothers, 2003) e, con minor fortuna, commedie (Each his own wilderness, 1953; Mr. Dollinger, 1953; The truth about Billy Newton, 1955; Play with a tiger, 1963). Tra gli altri suoi scritti : The golden notebook (1962); Particularly cats (1966); Briefing for a descent into hell (1971); The summer before the dark (1973); The marriages between zones three, four, and five (1980); The Sirian experiments (1981); The good terrorist (1985); The fifth child (1988); Under my skin: volume one of my autobiography, to 1949 (1994); Love, again (1996); Walking in the shade: volume two of my autobiography, 1949 to 1962 (1997); The sweetest dream (2001); The story of general Dann and Mara's daughter, Griot and the snow dog (2005); The Cleft (2007); Alfred and Emily (2008). Nel 2007 le è stato conferito il premio Nobel per la letteratura.
