Matematico statunitense (Boston 1923 - Martha's Vineyard 1992); prof. nel Massachusetts alla Clark University di Worcester (1951), alla North Eastern University di Boston (1964) e, dal 1969, alla Rutgers University di New Brunswick. Ha dato importanti contributi alla geometria algebrica, completando negli anni Ottanta la classificazione dei gruppi semplici finiti. Tra le opere: Finite groups (1968); Finite simple groups: an introduction to their classification (1982); The local structure of finite groups of characteristic 2 type (in collab. con R. Lyons, 1983); The classification of the finite simple groups (in collab. con Lyons e R. Solomon, 1994)
